Alina Tait, by Alina.

During my early childhood my father worked as a photographer. Our bathroom had been turned into a darkroom and my father would not let me go in because of the danger of touching chemicals or disturbing him. Once, I insisted so much that he finally agreed. I couldn't see much at first, but after adjusting to the low light, I loved watching every move. The magic as an image appeared on the paper and feeling the smell of the processing solutions created a wondrous playground for me. That was my first experience in the darkroom, and after that I only had ambitions to create images. I never lost this fascination, and now having studied a degree in photography, I am following my dream through POTO.

Charlie is a local, and has lived in the Liverpool area for most of his life. He has many years of experience working for large international corporations in technology and senior management positions. A few years ago Charlie was gifted the opportunity to pursue his dream (he was made redundant...(!)), and took the plunge, and dived head-first off the corporate ladder and into the photography business.  This was to allow him to explore his long standing passion for photography, and especially in creating images of the rich heritage available in his hometown.

POTO Studios are excited to present our latest online collection from local artist, Ed Farrell. Ed's work is stunning, and often presents unseen views from Liverpool's past and present. His work is sure to catch your eye if you're a Liverpool local, or have a connection with the city in any way.

Ed Farrell is a largely self-taught artist who works mainly in pen & ink and watercolour. He has for some time been engaged in a relatively long-term project to catalogue – through his art – the Architecture of Liverpool. This body of work includes detailed architectural studies, pub interiors, and aerial landscapes past and present. Reconstruction of historical Liverpool neighbourhoods are carried out with painstaking reference to old maps and hundreds of archive photographs. He aims for absolute accuracy and his detailed works often involve many days of both research and execution. His aim is to articulate architecture to better enable enjoyment of Liverpool’s great buildings.

All of Candie Payne's work is drawn first with pencil, and then elaborated upon using technical pens and ink, and sometimes watercolour. Each drawing takes upwards of 25 hours to complete, and she often use a technique known as pointilism to achieve the detail. She tries to explore and express nuances of the human condition...the quirks and absurdity of it...love, dreams and relationships and uses symbolism to represent certain elements. Candie is inspired by artists such as Aubrey Beardsley, Gustav Klimt and Arthur Rackham.

Collection for Christmas 2015

A Collection of Football Art

This collection captures the story of ‘The Giants’, as they’re popularly known, who arrived in Liverpool on the weekend of 20-22 April 2012. The spectacular three-day event commemorated 100 years since the sinking of the Titanic, which carried the name of its home port, Liverpool, on its hull, with a unique, human perspective on the tragedy.

The creations of French street theatre pioneers Royal de Luxe, estimated crowds of 250,000 turned into more than 800,000 as the two giants – and Xolo the dog – captured the public imagination with their cheeky, expressive and poignant adventures around Liverpool.

The story is based on the real life tale of ten-year-old May McMurray, whose father William was a first class bedroom steward on board the Titanic. May wrote a letter to her father, which didn’t arrive until after the ill-fated ship had sailed – it was returned to the sender, and is now on display in the Merseyside Maritime Museum at the Albert Dock, where it proved inspiration for Royal de Luxe artistic director Jean-Luc Courcoult.

POTO Studios are proud to present local artist, Helen Lunt. Helen is quite a prolific painter and her work varies from character based pieces to very colourful abstract canvases. She enjoys painting as a means to express herself within boundaries of her own creation, without having the need to explain away exactly how to interpret her work leaving that to the imagination and personal meaning creation of the viewer. Helen also sees her work as 'bookmarks' for periods in her life.

Helen's influences are Dali for his unique imagination, Klimt for the beauty of his work, and Escher for the sheer fascination generated for Helen by his work.

This collection of 15 dramatic images of the Liver Building is taken from the celebration of its 100th anniversary, from July 22-24 2011. Czech Republic-based visual arts collective The Makula were commissioned to create this striking story, encapsulating 800 years of Liverpool’s history in a colourful, geo-mapped projection onto the face of the Liver Building.

Part of the city’s summer On the Waterfront festival, the projection, Luminous Flux, celebrated the anniversary of the Liver Building’s opening in July 1911, and the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool, which sits alongside the Three Graces. Musicians performed on each night of the festival – jazz singer Connie Lush on the Friday, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on the Saturday, and band 6ix Toys on the Sunday, as the Pier Head came alive with multi-coloured lanterns and illuminated fish in the canal.

Taking its inspiration from the uniqueness of Liverpool’s architecture, the projection flashes through 800 years of history, tracing the city from a distant rural past through slavery, the industrial revolution and world war to the Beatles and its more recent cultural renaissance.

These paintings and drawings arose from strolls around the serpentine lake in Toxteth’s Princes Park.  An oasis of nature in L8, the park was designed by Joseph Paxton and opened in 1842.  Today, the lake is home to a wide variety of wildlife and stocked fish.  Now a Grade II Historical site, the park is a centre for local activities and is cared for by the Friends of Princes Park (friendsofprincesparkl8.org.uk). With a background in scientific illustration, David Montagnes has spent the last 25 years working as an ecologist at the University of Liverpool.

Maggie Fulton studied at Liverpool College of Art for 5 years during the 1960’s, a particularly vibrant and creative period for the College, students and staff, many of whom went on to achieve fame through a variety of different art forms.

Following a firm grounding in the basic techniques of a variety of art disciplines Maggie specialised in ceramics and interior design, since when she has he continued to maintain a strong interest in buildings and their architectural features and settings.

Alongside a career in education, initially as a an art teacher and then as an art advisor for a local education authority, Maggie has continued to indulge her love of the use of line through regularly taking part in life drawing sessions.

Maggie feels that life drawing is an essential element in developing drawing and observational skills, not only clarifying the anatomy and beauty of the human form but allowing for the development of the use of line for purposes of perspective and to show differences in depth and distance in landscape. Line can be used to portray, not only what we see in front of us, but also to express emotion and mood through curves and angles and the weight and clarity of the line itself.

Rather than using a more precise, formal architectural drawing style Maggie tries to capture the atmosphere and character of buildings and their settings through spontaneous relaxed pencil drawing and watercolour painting. She feels that this style reflects the character and ethos of certain environments and is evocative of the specific atmosphere in which the people live and relax.

Maggie has recently established a base in North Wales where she spent a good deal of time during her early years with her grandparents, Nain and Taid, and this has allowed her to renew her love of the area and to once more portray the places that inspired her as a child.

Peter Cameron is a Liverpool artist who works from the Elevator Studios on Parliament Street where anyone is welcome. His work is mostly figurative..."I find it hard to paint pictures without people in them"... Quirky, ominous and amusing are words often used to describe his images. He uses most paint media, but Peter's favoured medium is soft pastels where he can work close to the surface. This allows him to either minimise the random effects of his Parkinson's disease, or "just let the syndrome do the talking"... He says he is glad of the choice, and enjoys the element of surprise.

Song & Dance is a series of wildlife drawings inspired by walks in Liverpool’s Princes Park during the coronavirus pandemic.  The series celebrates our local urban greenspaces by drawing attention to the songs of birds – depicted as sonograms – and the dance of honeybees – depicted as a map of the waggle-dance.  These sketches draw upon both western 19th-century drawings and eastern prints, reflecting Liverpool’s multicultural history.  With a background in scientific illustration, David Montagnes has spent the last 25 years working as an ecologist at the University of Liverpool.

About David

I’m a biologist at the University of Liverpool, where, for the last two decades, I have studied aquatic ecosystems and taught subjects ranging from biodiversity to scientific writing.  As a young scientist I supported my education through art and illustration, describing new species and providing works for books and posters.  Sadly, I let that lapse.
Liverpool’s vibrancy and iconic architecture have always attracted me and have been an inspiration, rekindling my artistic nature.   In this recent work I’ve tried to capture the pleasure I take from living here.  I hope you enjoy my work, as much as I enjoyed making it.

“Liver Bird” is a twelve-part series that brings the evocative avian symbol of Liverpool to visit the city’s most iconic structures and spaces.  Following tradition dating back at least to the 17th century, I have based the Liver Bird on a cormorant grasping seaweed in its beak.  I then broke with tradition - embracing Liverpool’s multicultural character, I loosely adopted an oriental style.  Look carefully at the pseudo-oriental signature; what does it say?  The red seal at the bottom of this script is my personal symbol, depicting a species of micro-organism (a protozoan) that I described.

Yin-yang Liver Birds  Yin & Yang symbolises an ancient Chinese philosophy depicting how seemingly contrasting forces interact to produce harmony and unity.  How better to reflect Liverpool’s ability to merge cultures and accept diversity, from football to ethnicity and religion.  Here Montagnes riffs on a range of Easter to Western artistic styles, playing with his Liver Bird theme.  With a background in scientific illustration and design, David Montagnes has spent the last 25 years working as an ecologist at the University of Liverpool.
