St John's Market 1935

St John's Market 1935 by Ed Farrell.

This watercolour reconstruction of Central Liverpool sets out accurately depict the area as it would have looked in 1935 and to articulate the scale of demolition that took place in the decades that followed. Around 80% of the buildings shown here, including St John’s Market (centre) Queen’s Square (Centre right) and Clayton Square (left) were demolished to make way for shopping mals and other modern spaces. Even surviving buildings were remodelled. This unique picture was built from old Ordnance Survey maps and hundreds of archive photographs.
