Paul McCartney was inspired to write the hit “Penny Lane” whilst sitting at this bus shelter, which is referenced in the song.
“Behind the shelter in the middle of the roundabout”
When the boys were young they used to meet here, as it was centrally located for all of them. Whilst waiting for the bus, Paul jotted down the things he saw, including the barber's shop, the bank and a nurse selling poppies. He later turned these notes into the song, which celebrates this time in their life.
