The Liver Building bursts out of the drab post-war years into vibrant psychedelia in this photograph, with the advent of the Beatles. Retaining its position as an important west coast port, the city was influenced by thousands of sailors returning from America, and the musical influences could be heard in Liverpool's distinct sounds, of skiffle, and, later, Merseybeat.

Their early music progressed from classic rock and roll to pop before becoming more experimental, innovative and psychedelic with their growing fame, and for a band that played together for less than ten years defined the sound of music we listen to to this day.
